Lions poster winners announced
Several Wadena-Deer Creek sixth-grade students were recognized for their Lions Youth Outreach Posters.
Winners chosen by local Lions Club included: Kobe Snyder, Bluffton Lions Club winner with his “Don’t Text While Driving" poster; Noah Sibbert, Deer Creek Lions winner with “Keep Your Face Toward the Sunshine” poster; and Jordin VanOurkerk, Wadena Lions Club winner with “I May Be A Chicken for Not Trying Drugs” poster. Each first-place winner received a $25 check.
VanOurkerk earned a second-place finish at the district level and received an additional $75. Snyder and Sibbert also received a $25 Amazon card for their entry at the district level.
Other winners included: Jenna Dykhoff fourth place, $20; Bryanna Kleinke, fifth place, $15; Macy Wynn, sixth place, $10; Madyson Beversluis, seventh place, $10; Amaya Walker, eighth place, $10; Owen Hendershot, ninth place, $5; and Mazie Boen,10th place, $5.
The contest was open to students in grades 6-8 dealing with the following subjects: drug and alcohol abuse/awareness, violence, volunteering, citizenship, peer pressure, as well as healthy and positive aspects of life growing up. The posters were judged and displayed at the 5M9 Lions Mid-Winter Convention in January.
WDC sixth-grade teacher Lori Grendahl said she appreciates the poster contest because students create posters with some powerful messages. Grendahl also extends the school’s appreciation to the Lions Clubs for sponsoring this contest, and especially Larry Spenst for organizing the poster contest for students.
