WDC's Westrum signs letter of intent to play tennis at Concordia College
Wadena-Deer Creek’s Abby Westrum has signed a letter of intent to play college tennis and continue her academic career at Concordia College in Moorhead starting in 2018-19.
Westrum is a senior at Wadena-Deer Creek and has been playing on the Wolverine varsity tennis team since eighth grade. A 5-foot-4 player, Westrum earned a fourth-place finish at the Section Singles Tournament this past fall. She was selected All-Conference Honorable Mention her sophomore and junior years, as well as All-Conference her senior year. She served as team captain during her junior and senior seasons.
Concordia Head Tennis Coach Joseph Murrey watched Westrum play at No. 1 singles at the Section Tourney in Fargo this past fall and was very impressed with Westrum's performance.
"I'm really excited that Abby will be joining us. She will definitely help us to continue to grow as a team," Murrey said.
Off the court, Westrum has demonstrated a stellar academic career at Wadena-Deer Creek High School with a 3.969 GPA. She is active in Concert Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, National Honor Society and Knowledge Bowl. She’s also served on the yearbook staff, student council and prom committee.
WDC’s head tennis coach Jordan Cresap is thrilled to see one of his players continue on to play tennis collegiately.
“Her level of commitment to not only the sport but her academics has put her in a great position to do well at Concordia,” Cresap said. “She was a perfect example for our younger girls in the program to look up to. She proved that success is not an accident and that it takes many hours and days of behind-the-scenes work to excel at the high school level and become a collegiate athlete. Concordia not only got a great tennis player, but an exceptional student and person as well.”
Westrum plans to study biology (pre-med) at Concordia. She is the daughter of Lee and Jennifer Westrum of Wadena.
