Casey Volkmann signs with Winona State University volleyball team
Wadena-Deer Creek senior Casey Volkmann signed her letter of intent this week to play Division II college volleyball for the Winona State University Warriors during their 2018 season.
WDC head volleyball coach Sue Volkmann said she is excited to see one of her players -- who is also her daughter -- move on to the next level.
“I’m really happy for her because it’s a goal she’s always had. She’s competitive and she’s anxious to play in that competitive atmosphere,” said Coach Volkmann.
Volkmann is a 5’8” outside hitter, who is a six-year varsity player and five-year starter for the Wolverines. She played her final season as a WDC volleyball player at the State Class A Tourney, Nov. 9-11, capping off the team’s amazing run with a fourth-place trophy. This season, Volkmann surpassed a career milestone for kills, with 2,063, along with 2,018 digs, 325 aces, and 118 blocks.
WDC Activities Director Norm Gallant described Volkmann as not only a great volleyball player and athlete, but also a great student.
“Casey works very hard, is dedicated and talented. She has a great personality and is a leader here at WDC. Winona State is getting a super student-athlete and I have no doubt that she will be successful as she moves to the bigger stage,” said Gallant.
Volkmann has earned an impressive list of high school accolades during her athletic and academic career at Wadena-Deer Creek High School. For volleyball, they include MN All-State 1st Team 2016 and 2017; MN State Tournament All-Tournament Team 2017; Academic All-State 2017; Park Region Conference MVP 2016 and 2017; 5-time All-Conference; 6-time letter winner; 5-time Brainerd Dispatch All-Area 1st Team; and a 3-year captain.
In addition to volleyball, Volkmann is a standout student-athlete in basketball, softball and track & field for the Wolverines. In basketball, she’s a 5-time letter winner, a 2-time captain and a 2-time All-Conference Honorable Mention. In softball, as a pitcher and shortstop, she’s a 3-time letter winner and earned All-Conference in 2017. Her sophomore year, Volkmann participated in track, where she earned All-Conference 2016 honors and a letter.
Volkmann maintains a 4.0 grade-point average and is a member of WDC’s National Honor Society. She’s been named Academic All-State in 2017 and is a 5-time MSHSL Spotlight on Scholarship recipient.
She’s also involved in Knowledge Bowl, band, jazz band, choir, student council and served as a peer mentor.
Volkmann said she chose Winona State University because it was a good fit for her.
“I like the smaller campus and I really liked the volleyball coaching staff,” said Volkmann, who grew up watching her two older sisters, Courtney and Caitlin, play volleyball in state tournaments at WDC as well as play college volleyball at Bemidji State University.
Volkmann said she plans to study mathematics at Winona State. She is the daughter of Tim and Sue Volkmann of Deer Creek.
Winona State University’s volleyball team is coached by Joe Getzin, who is entering his third season as the head volleyball coach at Winona State.
In his second year, the Warriors advanced to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) championship game. The team won 20 games and were ranked 22nd in the final AVCA poll. During the season the Warriors had four wins over top-ten ranked opponents on the year.
