WDC’s FFA chapter celebrates ‘National FFA Week’
This week, the Wadena-Deer Creek FFA chapter is celebrating “National FFA Week.”
Currently, WDC has 18 members in their FFA chapter. The state of Minnesota has more than 10,000 members and there are over 600,000 FFA members nationally.
The week-long tradition began in 1947 when the National FFA Board of Directors designated the week of George Washington's birthday as National FFA Week in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer.
According to WDC’s FFA advisor, Richard Muckala, WDC has received national awards for its National Chapter Application and is currently in the process of filling an application for this year. Some of WDC’s chapter activities include: children’s pedal pulls, cherry pie social, parades floats, corn drive for Camp Courage, and Farm Safety Day.
This year, the WDC FFA chapter had teams in dairy foods, horse judging, fish and wildlife, companion animal, and ag mechanics. Junior Ethan Benson placed second at the University of Minnesota (Crookston) Ag Activities Day in ag mechanics. For his second-place finish, Benson received a $500 scholarship.
WDC FFA officers include: Ethan Benson, president; Mitch Janson, vice president; Olivia Schwartz, secretary; Madison Barthel, treasurer; Ryan Grendahl, reporter; Jordan Brink, reporter; Beth Schmitz, sentinel; and Jack Goeden, officer at large.
Other members include: Emily Astle, Jezebel Snyder, Tanner Horn, Abbie Clayton, Briana Malone, Molly Gilje, Zac Schertler, Starr Hanson, Stacy Hundeby and Jordan Woessner.
