Spenst family establishes scholarship for WDC special education students
Larry and Judy Spenst of Wadena have established two $500 scholarships for special education graduates at Wadena-Deer Creek High School.
Their son, Peter, a 1997 graduate of WDC High School, received a quality education thanks in part to two special education teachers. The scholarships will be given in honor of Jim Williams and Margaret “Mo” Smith, both retired WDC special education teachers.
“This scholarship is a thank you for the effort these students put forth to get their diploma,” said Larry and Judy Spenst, who are retired farmers from Deer Creek, who remain active in the communities of Deer Creek and Wadena.
The criteria set forth by the Spenst Family Scholarship indicates WDC special education teachers will choose the students receiving the scholarships each year and students do not have to be continuing their education.
WDC School District senior bookkeeper Joyce Boyne accepted the scholarship donation on behalf of the WDC Scholarship Fund.
“We are grateful to the Spenst family for establishing this scholarship, not only for the financial benefit it will provide our students, but also for the recognition of the students’ hard work.
