WDC Schools awarded Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Grant again!
Wadena-Deer Creek Elementary was once again awarded the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant for the 2014-15 school year.
This is the fourth time WDC has been awarded this grant. The Minnesota Department of Education administers the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program (FFVP) through a federal grant. The program provides children with a variety of fresh fruit and vegetable snacks during the school day at no cost.
“During the school year, WDC students get a fresh fruit or vegetable each day in addition to their lunch and breakfast,” said Sandie Rentz, Food Service Director, who applied for the grant.
Students at WDC are learning about healthy eating from the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. “This program is showing students how to make good choices about the food they eat. The fresh fruit and vegetables are changing the way we think about snacks,” said Rentz. “We know that those fruits and vegetables keep us healthy and ready to learn.”
WDC partners with Russ Davis Wholesale of Wadena to provide fruits and vegetables. They also provide nutritional information and recipes.
