WDC celebrates two Foster Grandparents' birthdays during National Volunteer Week

WDC Elementary celebrated two very special birthdays today for two Foster Grandparents during “National Volunteer Week.”

Leona Porter turned 80 years old today and Jo Weiher will turn 82 on April 13. What amazing milestones for two volunteers who are treasured by WDC staff.

Leona Porter is no stranger to Wadena-Deer Creek Schools. She served as a teacher's assistant for 39 years, the majority of that time at Deer Creek School. She's volunteered as a Foster Grandparent for past five years now. "I love working with children," said Porter, who can be seen walking outdoors every day--no matter the weather--around the school's sidewalks.  She is active in her church, where she served as Sunday School superintendent for 20 years and currently assists with church service at Henning Nursing Home.

Josephine “Jo” Weiher has been serving as a Foster Grandparent for the past four years in Jayne Johnson's preschool classes. She said she loves those little moments when kids will hop on her lap and tell her, "Grandma, I love you!" Most days, she leaves her house at 7:30 a.m. and doesn't get home until 9 p.m. "Staying active by volunteering here at school and my church keeps me young," said Grandma Jo, who will celebrate her 82nd birthday on April 13 with her family.
