WDC students perform at Subsection music contests
Several Wadena-Deer Creek (WDC) High School music students earned superior ratings at Subsection Music Contests held recently at WDC and Pine-River Backus schools.
The jazz ensemble received a superior rating for performing three selections: a rock piece called “Are You Ready To Rock?;” a ballad called “After Sunset” featuring Jacob Goeden on alto saxophone; and a swing piece called “Norwegian Wood” featuring Maddy Hinojos on tenor saxophone.
The jazz ensemble members include: Jacob Goeden, Kendra Evans, Jessica Langer, Matt Goeden, Brittany Andrews, Thomas Quincer, Aaron Beck; Matthew Quincer, Elise Kallevig, Casey Volkmann, Mason Evans, Lucas Doyle, Ryan Grendahl, Kylie Lupkes, Brandee Bly, Maddy Hinojos, Jez Snyder, Paige Hartman, Isaac Laughlin and Wyatt Fitzsimmons.
Other ensembles and solos receiving a superior rating at Subsection Music Contest included: Tyler Wheeler, snare drum solo; Abby Wegscheid, oboe solo; and Brittany Andrews, Ashley Carlson, Maria Garces Cubells, flute trio. Students receiving an excellent rating were Emily Astle and Lydia Burns for their flute duet.
Brittany Andrews received a superior rating on her soprano vocal solo at Subsection Vocal Solo/Ensemble Contest on April 9 at Pine River-Backus Schools. Andrews performed ‘Se tu m’ami” by Alessandro Parisotti.
Those receiving a superior rating have the opportunity to attend the Section/State Contest on Saturday, May 3 in Staples. The band students are under the direction of Lisa Weniger. Vocal student Brittany Andrews is under the direction of Mike Ortmann.
