Wahlin named Section 8A Girls’ Tennis Coach of the Year
Wadena-Deer Creek’s first-year head coach Katrina Wahlin has been named the Section 8A “Girls’ Tennis Coach of the Year.” Section 8A coaches selected Wahlin for this honor.
The Wolverine tennis team completed a 10-7 season recently, doubling their win total from last year and demonstrating great improvement during the season.
Wahlin is in her third year teaching first grade at WDC Elementary. She also serves as an assistant girls’ basketball coach, a strength and conditioning coach with WDC’s summer WIN program and volunteers her time with the track & field team. WDC Activities Director Norm Gallant said the recognition is well deserved.
“What a great honor for our first-year head tennis coach! She is an excellent teacher and coach in our school district. She is able to motivate kids and make them better athletes. She has great work ethic and kids really enjoy her as a coach. She’s a real asset to the community,” said Gallant.
Last year, the Wolverines finished with a 5-9 season and placed sixth in the Mid-State Conference tournament. At the beginning of this season, one of the team’s goals was to double their win record.
WDC senior Elise Kallevig has played on the WDC tennis team since seventh grade. She said this year the team has definitely grown in a positive direction, thanks to Coach Wahlin’s positive leadership.
“When we do conditioning, she makes it fun and positive. She pushes us at practice to do our best. She’s a great motivator,” said Kallevig.
Senior Maddy Hinojos said she likes how Coach Wahlin emphasizes “mental toughness” on and off the court. “She applies it to life situations. She keeps tennis fun, but she works us hard too. She definitely deserves this award,” said Hinojos.
Student-athletes in this year’s tennis program include seniors Maddy Hinojos, Erin Johnson and Elise Kallevig; sophomores Whitney Eckhoff, LaRissa Evans-Maisio, Nicole Miller, Sarah Moen, Liz Peterson, Jess Rondesvedt, and McKayla Woods; freshmen Lindy Jones and Abby Westrum; and eighth-graders Shawna Clausen and Grace Hinojos. Scott Endres serves as assistant coach.
