WDC football team holding food drive Aug. 21
The Wadena-Deer Creek (WDC) football team is making an early pre-season drive. WDC Head Coach Howie Kangas is leading the drive to help stomp out hunger locally by organizing a food drive.
“Instead of having a fundraiser to support us, we decided to make an effort to support the community,” Kangas said.
In his second year as the Wolverine’s head football coach, Coach Kangas is teaching his young men some important life skills – the power of giving back to your community.
After visiting with Mary Ann Hagen from the Wadena Food Shelf, Kangas found an organization that needed help. “Mary Ann told me, there’s been a 15-percent increase in need at the food shelf this summer – that’s about 25 additional families,” Kangas said.
To fill the need, the WDC football team’s food drive, “Together, We Can” will be collecting food and donations on Wednesday, Aug. 21. They are asking the residents of Wadena, Deer Creek and Bluffton to purchase or donate up to $10 worth of non-perishable food and/or personal care products, or make a monetary donation of $10 payable to the Wadena Food Shelf.
Wearing their blue-and-gold jerseys, about 50 WDC football players will split into small groups to canvas the communities by going door-to-door on Aug. 21 from 1 to 5 p.m. to pick up items left on front-door steps. Their goal is a challenging one, as Kangas and his team are hoping to collect 5,000 pounds of food/donations.
If you’d like to make a monetary donation, please make the check payable to: Wadena Food Shelf. Mail it to: WDC Football Food Drive, Attn: Mary Fix, 600 Colfax Ave SW, Wadena MN 56482. For more information, call the high school at 632-2300.
