Youths build birdhouses
There will be quite a few happy backyard birds thanks to youths who built birdhouses recently as part of a youth enrichment class. The class was sponsored by Wadena-Deer Creek-Bluffton Community Education.
Retired WDC education assistant Mike Holzer taught the class, open to a limited number of fifth- and sixth-graders, in the Industrial Arts classroom at WDC Middle/High School. During the class, students followed a birdhouse plan. They measured their pine boards, sawed and assembled the birdhouses during two class sessions.
Students also learned a variety of birds may nest in their birdhouses, such as bluebirds, wrens, chickadees and tree swallows.
Isaac Breitling said he enjoyed sawing the pine boards the best, and is excited to see what kind of bird makes a home in his house. “It was a fun class!” Breitling said.
