DARE GRADUATION PROGRAM cont.

K9 dog Nitro demonstrated how he can attack when given a command during the DARE Graduation program. He’s 3 years old and can sniff out five different kinds of drugs. He’s been working as a K9 dog for a year now and has already been on 33 cases. He’s even tracked a fleeing person 1 1/2 miles and found the suspect hiding in pine trees. Way to go, Nitro!

Graduation speakers included Wadena Police Chief Naomi Plautz, DARE instructor/Police Officer Nick Grabe, WDC Middle/High School Activities Director Norm Gallant, and WDC DARE coordinator/sixth-grade teacher Lori Grendahl.

Sixth-grade essay winners Montana Carsten, Hally Hamby, Amaya Walker and Matthew Wegscheid read their essays on what they learned during their DARE classes.

Sixth-graders lined up and received their certificate from Officer Grabe and congratulatory handshakes from Chief Plautz, Mr. Gallant and Wadena Elks Lodge representative Theresa Dunbar.

The program ended with Wadena County Sheriff’s Deputy Troy Wangsness and his specially trained German Shepherd, Nitro, giving an "attack" and hand-signal demonstration (with Officer Grabe being the attack victim!), as well as answering questions from students and the audience about Nitro. Wadena County Sheriff Mike Carr Jr. also helped answer questions too.

Students and families enjoyed red and black (DARE colors) cupcakes and pop to celebrate their graduation.

Special thanks to the Wadena Elks Lodge for their financial contributions to the DARE program as well as Pepsi and Super One for providing refreshments for the graduation reception.

What a fantastic program for our sixth-graders! Congratulations on your graduation from DARE!

Wadena Elks members Theresa Dunbar, and Pat and Doug Formanek served cupcakes and pop to DARE grads and their families during the reception following the DARE graduation program. Special thanks to the Wadena Elks for being the major sponsor of DARE, too!
